The Best Dive Knife | A Sharper Look

Man am I clever with titles! Maybe not so much, but I do know quite a bit about dive knives. I am one of those divers/snorkelers who always has one strapped to their leg.

What makes a good dive knife?

It depends on the intended use. Seems obvious, but I have witnessed many a diver bring the wrong knife for the job. I tend to break dive knives down into two main categories. However, every diver will have their reasons for why the prefer a certain knife over another. Personally, I think a lot of it comes down to aesthetic….because who doesn’t like having a big knife strapped to their leg?

1. Spearfishing Knivespromate dive knife

Spearfishing brings its own set of options you must consider in your dive knife. First off, I would highly recommend using a pointed knife such as the Riffe Silencer. A strong pointed tip will allow you to make sure your fish is dead on those less than 100% accurate shots. I also find it is crucial to have a serrated edge to cut through any fishing line, or your own shot line if the fish circles back. Overall, I would recommend spearfishing dive knives to include:

  • Sharp point
  • Serrated blade
  • At least 4 inches in length

2. The Everyday Dive Knife

For those not stabbing fish, there are quite a few options available. One main option to choose from is whether to have a pointed or blunted tip. The blunted tip can be safer for younger divers, and is great for any underwater prying that may occur. Many knives also include line cutters, different grips, and a variety of blade lengths.

How Do I Choose?

I have tried out a variety of knives and have found it comes down to personal preference and how you plan on using it. I would recommended keeping your knife as small as you are willing to go. Large knives get heavy and can be clunky underwater and can be hard to get back if you drop.
